#IAmGalen: Edward Aguilar, Consultant
What was your background prior to joining Galen?
I have been in the healthcare industry for over 15 years and served as an independent consultant for 4 years. During my 15 years, I managed several clinics and served as a technical analyst in both an urgent care and family practice clinic. I oversaw the entire operation with residents and faculty staff, providing support of the EHR. Through my time in healthcare, I was was a technical trainer as well. My current role for the projects I support include serving as a data analyst for ambulatory administration overseeing over 6 clinical sites.
What originally drew you to Galen/what was your first impression?
Working in Staten Island, NY as an independent consultant, I met 2 Galeneers and after working with them I did some research on Galen. It was suggested to me to apply and I’m so glad I did. I was impressed with what I read online about Galen and was excited to be a part of a great team.
What does your job entail, and what is the one thing you hope to do in it this role?
My initial introduction with Galen was with St. Luke’s University Health Network. My job entailed Allscripts Touchworks support, including on-call & on-site support, go-live and builds. One thing I was able to do in this role was using my experience in other EHRs and use my skills to train colleagues and assist medical staff to make their transition as easy and painless as possible.
Please tell us about your experience in working with EHRs.
I as a technical trainer for several years and provided EHR build as well. As a technical trainer, I worked on several roles training MD’s, Nurses, Residents, etc. on how to navigate the EHR, assisted with workflow, and made adjustments to meet the needs of the medical staff.
What does your day-to-day job involve and why are you passionate about it?
My day-to-day varies. Initially, it consisted of working on Touchworks and other applications. Some days it involved being on-call and assisting providers on any issues they encountered during the day or after hours. I enjoyed this part of the job, knowing I am able to assist and allow the provider to continue his patient care without issues or concerns on how to document in the EHR. It was also gratifying to learn and provide workflow suggestions to make the providers’ daily routine as smooth as possible. I greatly enjoy the training aspect of my job.
What do you like about the culture here?
The culture at Galen is one I have not been a part of before. The support of the team is amazing and everyone is willing to share their knowledge to make Galen shine. It’s not about one person; it’s about the entire company. It’s a great way to succeed and shine with any client.
Anything else you’d like people to know?
I have over 20 years of Healthcare experience, having worked in several clinics providing training and/or clinical operation, managing staff, creating workflows, etc. I am always willing to learn, teach, and assist with any projects. I have worked with the following EHR’s: Allscripts, Epic (several modules), IDX, Cerner, and MEDITECH.
