#IAmGalen: Daniel Williams, Technical Consultant
When did you join Galen, and what do you do here?
June 2013, and I do TechOps work. The work I do is mainly setting up server environments, fixing them if they run into issues, doing any custom programming work, and helping to develop internal tools to help out my colleagues.
What was your background prior to joining Galen, and what made you join us?
Mostly technical support, internet security, working with server environments, all with some programming experience. I joined Galen because of the great things I heard from a friend of a friend (one Robert Downey, VP of Product Development) and couldn’t resist applying. During the interview I realized what a truly special company this is. The attitude towards providing good work, going the extra mile, the mature take on professionalism towards clients, and the support that we provide each other really makes this company excel and makes me love working here.
What team did you join at Galen and what does that team do?
I joined the TechOps team, which is sort of a subgroup within our Technical Services team, whose duties mainly involve setting up server environments and providing product support. We are who are called when things break, and we take great pride in figuring out solutions (sometimes very creatively) to tough problems.
Tell us about some cool work you’ve done here…
Since I’ve been at Galen I have dipped my toes into all kinds of projects and disciplines. I’ve worked on various projects pertaining to reporting, interfaces, data migration, installation, programming, training, troubleshooting, and evaluating. I’ve done a lot of environment assessment work and have worked with teams to eliminate pain points when it comes to using their tools. I’ve found a lot of time when people think that their software is running poorly because of one culprit it’s often another one and that’s why their issue doesn’t get fixed. A lot of the time I help people ask the right questions to solve their problems.
What do you like about the culture here?
The competence, internal support between coworkers, and general camaraderie here is off the charts. It’s a really rare thing to find such an organization and it is greatly appreciated. The attitude towards providing quality work and professionalism is top notch. On top of these great qualities, you also have a group of people who love to unwind and joke around just as much as we love to work.
What has been most unexpected about working here?
That the company works as well as it does while still maintaining a fun and loose atmosphere.
Anything else you think is important for someone to know about Galen?
I think it’s important to know that there are very few companies or individuals in the IT industry who really go the extra mile to become experts in their field or subject at hand, and Galen is nothing but these kinds of individuals. If there is any kind of problem that requires a creative solution that needs to be solved, we can do it.
