Client Success Story – Quality Reporting and Compliance Program at Saint Luke’s

Recently, we had the opportunity to provide assistance to Saint Luke’s Health System in an effort to monitor and improve patient quality reporting care measures.

Saint Luke’s Health System is comprised of ten hospitals with ambulatory services including home care, hospice, behavioral health, and various physician practices covering the Kansas City region. Deborah Gash, Chief Information Officer, shared the business need that required a solution as well as her experience in working with the Galen team.

“Saint Luke’s is very focused on improving quality measures so we can demonstrate high quality of care as well as achieve performance incentives.  Saint Luke’s recently migrated from seven electronic health records to one system in 2015.  The change created challenges with monitoring performance as well as data submission at the end of the reporting year.  We needed to combine data from multiple sources, measure performance across multiple groups, and ultimately report our data to CMS.  Providing a performance dashboard to monitor performance and understand where improvements were needed was especially challenging because of the migration to a single EMR solution.  Saint Luke’s worked with experts to assist with data extraction from the various EMR systems and development of a performance dashboard.  The work has enabled us to affect change before the end of the reporting year and implement workflow changes in our new EMR to ensure data elements are captured to reflect the quality of care being delivered in our practices and hospitals.  The work has also prepared us for reporting at the end of reporting period.”

To meet Saint Luke’s business need, Galen developed a Quality Reporting and Compliance (QRC) Program that is available to all clients with similar business drivers. For example, another client participating in an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) required detailed metrics to evaluate quality standards to ensure maximum improved outcomes. Galen’s QRC solution is a reporting and validation package based on our client’s needs, encompassing any quality metric desired. By combining data from multiple systems, including administrative (practice management) and clinical (electronic health record), into one reporting platform, we are able to provide a detailed view into the patient’s continuum of care.


Our validation process of the selected metrics and workflow evaluation assists with end-user adoption.   As a result, the key patient quality workflows increased thresholds which improves overall patient care.
