Philip-AndersonWhat was your background prior to joining Galen, and what do you do here?

Prior to joining the healthcare IT industry, I was working for a financial tech company. Oddly enough, I started that job October 2008—perfect timing for a job in finance—but thankfully I got to keep my job. After working at that company for about four years, I decided finance was not the industry for me and decided that I wanted to work in healthcare. I began to consider going back to school to become a nurse, but unfortunately, that dream came to a quick end after I nearly passed out seeing blood from a small dental procedure. In October 2012, I took a job as an Interface Project Manager at athenahealth, developing interfaces with the many vendors their clients used. In March 2014, in coordination with a move up to Vermont, I took a position as a technical consultant at Galen, working mainly on integration work, building interfaces for practices and HIE’s.

 What is the one thing you hope to do in the role?

At this point, I’ve worked at Galen for about two and half years and I’ve done way more than I ever could have expected in this role. The one thing I love about this company is the breadth of different things we do around here. Most of the projects I work on are different from what I’ve worked on before.  I am constantly learning new things and solving new problems for our clients. If I were to think of at least one thing I still hope to do in this role, I would say mentor a new hire right out of college. There are a lot of things I’ve learned over time about being a professional and making sure I have a good work/life balance that I think would be very valuable to someone new to the “real world.”

 What has been most unexpected about working here?

When I decided I was going to leave my last job, I knew there were a few things that I was not going to sacrifice with a new company. Culture was at the top of my list. When I started at Galen, I knew culture was something they were proud of, as they should be, it was refreshing and unique. Everyone who works here is approachable, friendly, and truly looks out for each other. People have this stereotype that if you work in a “cool” office environment you always need to be involved or you won’t fit in or will feel left out. That is just not the case here. People at Galen respect everyone’s comfort zone and don’t hold it against anyone. It’s genuine.

 Have the ideas and conversations that you’ve become a part of led to any unique/innovative approaches for solving client problems?

When you are assigned to a project as a Galen consultant, you bring a lot more than just your skills to perform the assigned task. Very rarely are the projects we work on cut and dry and that is why we get hired. By choosing Galen, you hire a giant brain trust consisting of everyone who works here.  This allows us to bring a unique perspective to every problem we face. Whether or not you are part of a particular project, the knowledge and background you share with the Galen community is always in some way leading to innovation that is helping solve our client’s problems.

For example, our integration team constantly shares details of a solution when someone solves a problem that they feel others might encounter or find interesting. With all that shared knowledge, people are continually being referred to each other for help, because they knew someone on the team worked on something similar and posted the details. Regardless of what interface engine people are working on or what downstream/upstream system they are working on; the information we share goes a long way to help our clients.
